Hell or High Water

about

"Hell or High Water" is an outlaw country/americana revenge song. The chain gang feel gives a modern take on a timeless genre. JP's co production gives it a bit of a hip hop feel in the intro which I really love. I wrote this song largely in response to how women are treated often especially during the "Me Too" movement. It's about fighting back and standing up to any person who tries to put you down or make you feel small. As the lyrics state,

"Did you feel like a big man when you made me feel so small? It's time to turn the tables. Time to watch you crawl."

lyrics

Gonna get to you come hell or high water
gonna take you by the hand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Gonna make you understand
I've been seeing you around I know you’re seeing me
I’ll show you where we stand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Now tell me who’s the man

Did you really think you could get away with treating a lady like that?
Like I was some kinda play thing you could hang outside to dry
Well I knew I had to get away it was all that I could do
Guess who’s back in town to see you shaking in your boots

Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Gonna take you by the hand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Gonna make you understand
I been seeing you around I know you’re seeing me
I’ll show you where we stand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Now tell me who’s the man

Karma it’s a funny thing it can make you cry it can make you sing
you’re gonna get a taste of yours sitting up on your high horse
Did ya feel like a big man when you made me feel so small
Well it’s time to turn the tables Time to watch you crawl

Gonna get to you come hell or high water
gonna take you by the hand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Gonna make you understand
I been seeing you around I know you’re seeing me
I’ll show you where we stand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Now tell me who’s the man

It’s time for you to fess up
Time to lay down the law
You said I’d never make it that I’d never go this far
Well times are a-changing it’s not a man’s world anymore
I’m not shutting up, not backing down, I won’t be quiet no more

Gonna get to you come hell or high water
gonna take you by the hand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Gonna make you understand
I've been seeing you around I know you’re seeing me
I'll show you where we stand
Gonna get to you come hell or high water
Now tell me who’s the man
Who's the man

If you take the pop appeal of Miranda Lambert and Shania Twain and mix it up with the cool edge of Lana Del Rey and smart songwriting of Brandi Carlisle, that is where we find the artistry of Amanda Cross. You’ll find yourself on a ride up the PCH with “Malibu Daydream” or through a dark alley with the Hitchcockian vibes of “Phantom”, ending up at her country pop roots with “How Did I Get Here”. ... more
